SalePlate ("SalePlate," "we," "us," or "our") is a meal planning service operated as a sole proprietorship based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. SalePlate is accessible at saleplate.ca.

2. What This Policy Covers
This Privacy Policy explains how SalePlate collects, uses, stores, shares, and protects your personal information when you use our website and app at saleplate.ca. It applies to all users — free, paid, and founding members.
By using SalePlate, you agree to the collection and use of your information as described in this policy.
3. Information We Collect
Information you provide directly
- Account information: your email address and password (or your Google account identifier if you sign in with Google)
- Profile information: height, weight, age, sex, activity level, and weight goal (lose / maintain / gain) — used to calculate your calorie and nutrition targets
- Food preferences: disliked ingredients, disliked food categories (e.g. dairy, gluten), and preferred cuisines
- Pantry contents: ingredient names, quantities, and categories you enter manually
- Grocery store selection: your preferred store and province
- Feedback: any feedback, bug reports, or feature requests you submit through the in-app feedback tool
Information generated by using the service
- Meal plans: the AI-generated meal plans created for your account, including recipes, ingredients, and nutritional data
- Shopping lists: the shopping lists generated from your meal plans
- Usage data: which features you use, when you generate meal plans, how many times you generate per week, and which upgrade prompts you see
Information collected automatically
- Analytics data: page views, session duration, button clicks, and in-app events — collected via PostHog analytics
- Device and browser information: browser type, operating system, and approximate location (country/province level only — we do not collect precise GPS location)
- Cookies: we use essential cookies for authentication (keeping you logged in) and analytics cookies via PostHog. You can disable analytics cookies in your browser settings.
Payment information
We do not store your credit card number, CVV, or full payment details. All payment processing is handled by Stripe. We store only your Stripe customer ID and subscription status so we can manage your account tier.
4. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide the service: generate personalized meal plans based on your profile, preferences, and the current week's grocery sale data
- Calculate nutrition targets: use your height, weight, age, sex, activity level, and goal to calculate daily calorie, protein, and fiber targets using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula and Health Canada / Dietitians of Canada dietary reference intakes
- Manage your subscription: process payments, enforce tier limits (free vs paid), track your generation count, and send billing-related notifications
- Improve the service: analyze aggregated, anonymized usage data to understand which features are used, which bugs occur, and where users drop off in the onboarding flow
- Send notifications: notify you when this week's grocery flyer data is loaded (if you requested a notification), when your referred friends sign up, when your feedback request is completed, and for billing confirmations
- Respond to your feedback: process bug reports and feature requests submitted through the in-app feedback tool
- Comply with legal obligations: retain records as required by Canadian law
We do not use your personal information for advertising or sell your data to any third party, ever.
5. Who We Share Your Information With
We share your data only with the service providers necessary to operate SalePlate. These are our sub-processors:

We do not share your personal information with any other third parties, sell your data, or use your data for advertising.
6. Health and Nutrition Data
The profile information you provide — height, weight, age, activity level, and health goals — is used solely to calculate meal plan nutrition targets. This information is stored securely and is not shared with any third party other than Anthropic for the purpose of generating your meal plan (without your name or identifying information).
Important: SalePlate is a meal planning tool, not a medical or nutritional advice service. The data you provide does not constitute a medical record and SalePlate is not a healthcare provider. See the full health disclaimer in our Terms of Service.
7. How Long We Keep Your Data

When you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days. Anonymized, aggregated data (not linked to you) may be retained indefinitely for product improvement purposes.
8. Your Rights Under PIPEDA
Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct any inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your personal information (right to be forgotten)
- Withdraw consent to our use of your data (note: withdrawing consent may prevent us from providing the service)
- Know what personal information we share and with whom
To exercise any of these rights, email us at saleplate.ca@gmail.com with the subject line "Privacy Request." We will respond within 30 days.
If you are located in the European Union or UK, you have additional rights under GDPR including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
9. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, including:
- Row-Level Security (RLS) on all database tables — your data is only accessible to your own authenticated session
- Encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for all data in transit
- Stripe handles all payment data — we never see or store your full card details
- API keys and service credentials are stored as encrypted secrets, not in application code

10. Cookies
We use the following cookies:
- Authentication cookies: essential for keeping you logged in — these cannot be disabled without breaking the service
- Analytics cookies (PostHog): track how you use the app so we can improve it — these can be disabled in your browser settings without affecting core functionality
We do not use advertising cookies or share cookie data with advertisers.
11. Children's Privacy
SalePlate is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at saleplate.ca@gmail.com and we will delete it promptly.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by a notice in the app at least 14 days before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent version.
Your continued use of SalePlate after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
